Fed: MPs told to be available for wrangle on package

Federal MPs have been put on standby .. as the parliamentary wrangle over the RUDD
government's 42 billion dollar economic stimulus package is thrashed out today.

The Senate's scheduled to resume sitting at nine am (AEDT) .. to consider a package
of amended bills passed by the lower house late on Thursday night.

But in a sign the government has yet to strike a deal with Independent Senator NICK
XENOPHON .. the House of Representatives has yet to formally rise for the sitting week.

It's adjourned until "the ringing of the bells" .. indicating the lower house may have
to consider Senate amendments to the package.

Senator XENOPHON torpedoed the package yesterday .. and is holding out for a better
deal for the Murray-Darling Basin.

He held talks with Treasurer WAYNE SWAN last night.
