Qld: Campaign to decrease credit card debts

BRISBANE, April 20 AAP - The Queensland government today launched a state-wide advertising
campaign targeting credit card awareness.

The Control Your Credit: Improving Credit Behaviours campaign, initiated by the Office
of Fair Trading, aims to raise awareness of consumers' credit card rights and the traps
people can fall into with credit facilities.

Fair Trading Minister Margaret Keech said credit card debt in Australia was at an all-time
high with a current growth rate of 20 per cent per year.

She said 16 per cent of the population spend all of their income immediately with no
plans for saving.

The campaign identified the likely candidates for uncontrollable credit card debt as
young people or young couples and single parents.
