SA: Horse put down after fall at Oakbank trials
Animal liberationists have renewed calls for the scrapping of jumps races at the Oakbank
Easter racing carnival.
The calls come after a horse which fell during today's trials had to be put down.
Seven-year-old gelding Mountain Affair fell at a hurdle during the final trial for
next Monday's annual carnival.
Oakbank chairman JOHN GLATZ says Mountain Affair fractured his shoulder in the fall
and trainers later shot him as there was nothing they could do to heal the injury.
Animal Liberation spokesman RALPH HAHNHEUSER says there's been an average of one horse
dying each year at the Oakbank carnival.
He says it's time to change the carnival into a flat racing event.
